Designing for Disaster

Within my environmental design coursework, I collaborated in a three-member team to create a solution addressing a global need - an emergency relief shelter tailored for natural disasters, with a focus on storm and flood scenarios. Our goal was to develop sustainable shelters for resilient communities, supporting those affected by such crises, driven by the lessons of recent major natural disasters revealing gaps in humanitarian aid, especially in shelter provision. Our iterative design process, informed by extensive research and unwavering commitment, resulted in a disaster-resistant shelter doubling as a temporary refuge. As the culmination of our semester-long effort, we produced a comprehensive book, with all graphic elements crafted by me, despite the project's division among team members.

This project was undertaken as part of my coursework in environmental design, where collaborative efforts within groups of three were central to conceptualizing and designing a solution to address a critical global need. In this instance, our focus was on crafting an emergency relief shelter tailored specifically for natural disasters, with a particular emphasis on storm and flood scenarios.

Our primary objective was to devise sustainable shelters that could be utilized to establish small, resilient communities, offering solace and support to individuals impacted by these devastating events. Recent major natural disasters have underscored the inadequacy of available resources, thereby highlighting areas where international humanitarian efforts can be enhanced, with shelter provision ranking prominently among them.

The journey towards our final design encompassed numerous iterations, informed by rigorous research, and driven by an unwavering commitment to innovative design. Through a process of trial and error, coupled with ongoing design refinements, we ultimately achieved a shelter capable of withstanding the rigors of disaster, while concurrently serving as a temporary haven for community members confronting such harrowing circumstances.

As the culmination of our semester-long endeavor, we were tasked with compiling our work into a comprehensive book. I am proud to note that all graphical elements within this project were executed by me, even though the project was divided among individual team members.
